How it works

Read the MRZ — the two or three lines of coded text at the bottom of passports and ID cards — from a photo or pasted text, and validate every ICAO 9303 check digit. You get the decoded fields (name, document number, nationality, dates) plus a verdict on whether the zone is internally consistent. What is the MRZ?

The Machine Readable Zone: the standardized lines of letters, digits and "<" fillers at the bottom of passports (2 lines of 44) and ID cards (3 lines of 30), defined by ICAO Doc 9303. They encode the holder and document data with check digits.

Is my passport photo uploaded anywhere?

No. OCR and validation run entirely in your browser. Neither the photo nor the decoded data ever leave your device — which is exactly why this tool exists.

Which documents are supported?

TD3 (passports, 2×44), TD1 (credit-card-size ID cards, 3×30) and TD2 (2×36) formats, including check-digit validation for the document number, dates and the composite digit.

Why do check digits fail on my photo?

Usually an OCR misread (glare, blur, skew). Retake the photo filling the frame with just the MRZ lines, flat and well lit. Look-alike characters (O/0, I/1) are auto-corrected when possible; if a digit still fails, the tool marks exactly which field to re-check.

Does a valid MRZ mean the document is genuine?

No. Valid check digits only prove the zone is internally consistent — useful to catch typos and OCR errors. Verifying authenticity requires physical and electronic security features (chip, holograms), which no online reader can check.
